C-1 Cristobalite

C1 - CristobaliteC.E.D. Cristobalite is synthesized from high purity quartz using a proprietary solid state, high heat manufacturing process. As such, not all synthetic Cristobalite products are created equal. Some products are partially converted to Cristobalite and therefore contain substantial amounts of quartz and glass. Other products are manufactured using mineralizers that can affect physical and chemical properties. C.E.D. Process Minerals C-1 Cristobalite is fully converted without the use of mineralizers.

  • High Purity – Ultra low alkali, alkaline earths and iron.
  • High Conversion – Highest Cristobalite content of any commercially available product.
  • Non-mineralized – Facilitates a fantastic surface finish and easy cleaning.
  • Custom Sizing – Precision milled to customer specifications.

Features and Benefits

  • Thermal Expansion – Coefficient of thermal expansion is 4 times greater than quartz in the temperature range from 20°C to 300°C. Highest PLC among commercially available products.
  • pH – Neutral, will not affect cement hydration reaction rates.
  • Particle Geometry – The rounded shape of the particles results in less abrasion than more angular quartz particles. Micro fissures provide one of the mechanisms for its use as a pigment extender.
  • Hardness – a mohs hardness slightly lower than quartz, providing for excellent abrasion, scrub and burnish resistance in end-use applications.
  • Refractive Index – 1.484 which is lower than quartz at 1.550. Reduces haze when used in clearcoats or semitransparent systems.
  • Crystal Surface – Terminates with siloxane groups rather than hydroxyl groups present on quartz. Less sensitive to moisture pick up and provides an excellent surface for silane treatments.
  • Reactivity – Completely inert, contributing to excellent chemical, acid and alkali resistance in formulated products.
  • Low Moisture Content – Ideal for formulating in moisture sensitive systems such as urethanes and other low water content formulations.

Other Cristobalite Products

C-2 Cristobalite – A cost effective version of C-1 suitable for less demanding application. Manufactured with the same high purity raw materials and non-mineralized. C-65 Cristobalite – Specially formulated for non-abrasive milling and polishing applications. Available in mesh sizes or custom blended to your specifications. GoreSil – Fully converted, high purity, non-mineralized Cristobalite specially prepared for use in paints, coatings and as a filler. Available in micron sizes and nano sizes
